OUR REPUTATION

SerenaCare is like being in your own home. It is a warm atmosphere with wonderful home-cooked meals. All the traditions and foods of the seasons are celebrated. The staff loves our mother as we do. We have complete peace of mind and feel as welcome here as we did in our mother’s own kitchen.

-The Wry Family

Every day I give thanks that my mother lives somewhere that is beautifully designed, spotlessly clean, has delicious food, professional staff and a wonderful atmosphere of caring and kindness. My mother is not only well taken care of physically and medically, but she feels loved and cared for emotionally.

Marthanne Harvey-Veno

I have complete peace of mind, even though I live in a different province, knowing my mother is well taken care of at SerenaCare. The premises are beautiful and offer all the medical and grooming facilities my mother needs and wants. She receives loving personal care from friendly and dedicated staff. SerenaCare is not an institution, but a happy home. I feel that my mother could not be in a better place.

“I said mum, I don’t know much about homes, but I’m going to find you a Cadillac of a place. When I met Susan and toured the residence, I knew I found the right place. It was so inviting.  Like walking in the back door of someone’s home.  The first time I took mum to see it, a staff member stopped to fix the back of mum’s hair.  It was just like a daughter would do and this is exactly how she was treated.   When we took mum out somewhere, they’d hug her goodbye and when we’d bring her back, she would walk in and call out ”I’m home!”

-Ginny Hill

Serenacare has been part of our family for more than 15 years.  I wouldn’t consider another home.  My first contact with Susan was in 2005 when my dad Arnold McLeod needed more physical care than we could provide.  Arnold was a long-time educator, a well-known volunteer and busy board member with many Moncton-area organizations.  A muscular disorder destroyed his mobility.  For dad, this was very hard but they treated him with such dignity and respect.  Every week a group of buddies showed up and they set them up at a table and provided tea and snacks while they played bridge together.

When my mother-in-law was in the end of life, although she had not been a resident long, Susan was able to provide palliative care.  Connie was only there for three weeks but the treated her like she had been there all her life. They doted on her, loved her and treated her with great care.  The common thread for all our family members has been the dignity and true caring that her staff gives to every resident. When Aunt Pearl died, I was sitting with her all night and Susan saw I was getting tired and offered to get someone to give me a break.  They are aware that in times like that, the family needs care too.

My mother, Midge McLeod joined the Lady Russell family in 2015.  Although she once swam 15 lengths of the pool, she now requires help with all daily activities.  I find it hard to watch my mothers’ abilities diminish but the staff seems to know exactly when she needs to be alone and when she needs a hug.

I tell mum she is living in a posh senior’s hotel! Good food, regular hairdos, nails polished, beautifully dressed each morning.  I have never sensed that the staff felt tending to residents was anything but a pleasure.  I think a lot about Susan’s work ethic, her commitment to excellent care, her desire to have her staff be the best they can be.  As soon as I come in, someone greets me by name and tells me where mom is.  That’s very important.  They recognize that I belong here too.

Alcha McConnell turned 99 this year and is one of the oldest residents.  Widowed in 1997, she’d lived in an assisted living senior’s apartment for many years, filling her hours with day trips, card games, and visits with friends. It became harder for her to care for herself and her children became concerned. Three years ago, after a medical emergency, she moved into the Lady Russell residence.  Now she enjoys the companionship of others, afternoon music, and activities. Her son, Norval McConnell and his sister, Katherine Paunins visit daily and enjoy peace of mind.  A retired sports coach and volunteer sports coach, Norval appreciates that his mother is encouraged to be as active as possible.

“This is the perfect scenario,” he says.  “Mom used to read a lot but her eyesight and hearing aren’t so good now but she still does everything she can: She gets up early, plays bingo, goes to all the meals and excursions.  She is rarely in her room.  Last fall, she knit dozens of pairs of mittens to donate to schools in the Moncton area”.

He notices that caregivers are always present, accessible and accommodating. They are ready to chat with family or spend time with each resident, no matter their ability to engage.  They pay attention to little things.  “She hates to waste food so they portion her meals perfectly for her”

He says: “ Susan’s hands-on approach is evident whether she’s digging in the dirt and planting flowers on the outside deck, organizing a birthday party or keeping them informed on business matters.  She’s so personable and makes you feel safe and welcomed….not just an owner/operator”

What Homes does Serenacare operate?

We have two locations: 4 Briarlea Drive and 15 Lady Russell in Moncton’s North End.

Do you have an attending Physician and how often does he do rounds?

We do have a House Doctor: Dr. Jocelyn Cormier. When a resident is admitted to Serenacare, the client’s files are transferred and your family member becomes his patient.

Rounds are done routinely on a weekly basis but can happen daily when necessary.

This personalized service is invaluable in our opinion.  Consequently, we have very few visits from Ambulance NB and very few re-admissions to the hospital.

What about your staff?

Our staff are selected for their commitment to excellence and the desire to serve.   No resident need goes unmet.  Our smaller setting offers one on one attention to detail that cannot be met in a large facility.

Are Residents able to remain at Serenacare if their needs increase?

Our professional staff along with our attending physician are able to meet changing needs.  Both buildings are equipped with ceiling tracks for lifts along with portable lifts to help non- ambulatory residents.  Both buildings are equipped with oxygen. Medical beds are provided at no extra cost.

What is the staff/resident ratio?

The ratio is 1:3 including the managers who work closely with the staff.  The Chefs are not included in this ratio.  Team work is taken very seriously – staff are trained to understand how important it is for everyone to do their share.  Because we are small and have very low staff turnover, mutual respect among team members is a given.

Meals and snacks

Food quality is extremely important.  We have 3 excellent cooks covering the two homes.

Fresh meat and vegetables are of the highest quality.

Toast is made with homemade bread – bacon, sausage, and eggs are made to order daily

Afternoon snack and hydration times – freshly chopped fruit served daily

Residents are offered 2 choices of entrée at each meal

Residents are bathed twice a week. Residents also enjoy a complete sponge bath morning and night.

We do have some residents who enjoy a shower or bath daily.

A hair stylist visits the in-house Salon Monday each week.  She performs haircuts, hair sets and perms.  We do the in-between shampoos and hair sets

What is the room size and set up? What can my loved one bring?

The rooms are 12×12’ in size.  They are equipped with vanity sinks and mirrors, closets, drawers, bed, nightstand.  Shelves can be installed upon request.

Residents are welcome to bring artwork, pictures, personal items (Ex. small curio cabinet) or a recliner.

Does each room have a private bathroom?

Private washrooms in a resident’s room can be a hazard if a resident happens to be in one unattended.  Level 3 residents generally require assistance in the bathroom both for safety reasons (i.e. falls) and for hygiene.

Washrooms are modern and spacious. There is one washroom for every three residents.

Cable is included in the monthly fee along with a modern flat-screen television in each room.  Phone jacks are behind each night stand but a phone line is the responsibility of the resident.  Basic phone generally runs around $23.00/month.

Pets such as a dog are welcome.
